Everything in place to expand Belarus-Zimbabwe cooperation

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) — There are a great number of areas where Belarus can step up cooperation with Zimbabwe, Belarusian First Deputy Industry Minister Aleksandr Ogorodnikov said during a meeting with a delegation from Bulawayo Province of Zimbabwe led by Minister of State for Bulawayo Province of Zimbabwe Judith Mkwanda, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Ogorodnikov emphasized that Zimbabwe, as well as the whole Africa, is of great interest to Belarus. He pointed out that in recent years Belarus-Zimbabwe relations have been developing quite dynamically. “We are working with partners in various areas, which includes the supply of agricultural machinery, tractors, combines, and trailed equipment. Zimbabwe is trying to adopt Belarus’ best practices,” he said. “Many areas of cooperation are still untapped.”

Aleksandr Ogorodnikov added that the meeting with representatives of Bulawayo Province was an opportunity to better understand the needs of the Zimbabwean market. The African delegation has already visited major industrial enterprises of Belarus, including Minsk Tractor Works.

Judith Mkwanda came to Belarus in a bid to expand cooperation and identify new areas of interaction. She noted that despite the fact that a regional-level delegation was visiting Belarus, the things they learned during this week can be scaled up throughout Zimbabwe.

"This visit is an initiative of the Bulawayo Economic Development Agency. Bilateral cooperation is gaining momentum. This resulted in the opening of the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Belarus and the exchange of official visits," she said. "During the visit to Belarus, we have the opportunity to establish cooperation in agriculture, cattle breeding, milk production, pharmaceutics, production of medical equipment, exchange programs in education and culture, and others. Moreover, we are considering purchase of agricultural and waste management equipment, cooperation in the development of transport infrastructure. In turn, Zimbabwe can offer Belarus raw materials, such as leather, for the automobile industry, and farm food products.” The minister described the delegation's visit as successful.

This year, the Belarusian Industry Ministry and the Zimbabwean Industry and Trade Ministry signed a memorandum of cooperation. The document aims at boosting bilateral relations and strengthening friendly and mutually beneficial ties between the countries.

Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second largest city after the capital Harare, a manufacturing center; it also hosts the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
