Energy Ministry against politicizing Belarusian electricity export to Ukraine

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – The export of Belarusian electricity to Ukraine should not be politicized. The press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry made the statement in response to Ukrainian mass media reports claiming Belarusian electricity is a threat to Ukraine's fuel and energy complex, BelTA has learned.

According to the Belarusian Energy Ministry, electricity trade with Ukraine is nothing but business. It should be considered only from the point of view of interaction between commercial entities. Attempts of individual Ukrainian mass media to politicize the process and enforce the idea that Belarusian electricity threatens the national interests of Ukraine are farfetched and do not benefit the bilateral relations, the Energy Ministry press service said.

The source noted that electricity trade had been resumed because the Ukrainian ban on importing Belarusian electricity had expired and entities operating on the Ukrainian electricity market are interested in cooperation with the Belarusian national energy company Belenergo. However, the volume of Belarusian electricity import to Ukraine does not exceed 1% of the capacity of the Ukrainian electricity market. Recent statements of Ukrainian experts are largely exaggerated, the press service noted.

Plans have been made to continue interagency negotiations on cooperation in the sphere of electricity, the source added.
