Electricity consumption on rise in Belarus

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarus is registering a strong increase in electricity consumption, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich said in an interview to the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant has cumulatively generated 33.9 billion kWh of electricity. This replaced almost 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas. “All the electric energy produced by the Belarusian nuclear power plant is consumed inside the country. In 2023, electricity production and consumption in the country amounted to 41.1 billion kWh. Annual growth made up 2.5 billion kWh. This is a significant increase in electricity consumption in the country. Some 28% of the total production and consumption in the country was secured by the electricity generated at the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” Viktor Karankevich said.

According to him, the upward trend in electricity consumption continues this year as well. In January-July the volume of electric energy consumption increased by 1.9 billion kWh. This comes thanks to energy-intensive industries and the increasing electric transport fleet. “The use of electric energy for charging electric vehicles has almost doubled over the 2024 period under review. Electric energy is also actively used by households for heating and hot water supply purposes. The growth is 1.4 times as compared with the previous year, with the consumption amounting to 555 million kWh,” the deputy prime minister said.

According to forecasts, in 2030 electricity consumption in Belarus will make up about 47 billion kWh. “Now we are analyzing data on consumption, as well as preparing relevant materials to analyze all aspects of the possible construction of a new plant or a third power unit: social, economic, financial, technological, and environmental parameters. There is a corresponding roadmap that defines the deadlines for preparing such justification materials, including feasibility studies. We continue this work in cooperation with many government agencies. Preparation of such documents will be completed in 2025,” Viktor Karankevich said.
