EAEU prime ministers approve concept to develop common market of medications

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) – The heads of government of the Eurasian Economic Union countries passed a concept on developing the common market of medications at a session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council that took place in Cholpon Ata, Kyrgyzstan on 14-15 August under the chairmanship of Prime Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Turchin, the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission told BelTA.

The Eurasian Economic Commission explained that the purpose of the document is to ensure stable operation of this market by enforcing mandatory requirements for safety, effectiveness, and quality of medications.

The concept contains a brief overview of the modern state of the medications market in the Eurasian Economic Union. It is noted that the market was actually started in 2019 when the registration of medications according to EAEU rules began and universal processes were introduced to enable data interaction between the government agencies in charge of registration, expert evaluation, and inspection for compliance with the union’s GMP rules.

“As the main directions for further development of the market the concept specifies the perfection and optimization of registration procedures and the regulation of the medication turnover, efforts to improve the performance of the information systems, develop infrastructure and competences in EAEU countries, their cooperation in the course of making pharmaceutical products, the regulation of medication turnover taking into account international experience,” the Eurasian Economic Commission press service said.

Medication registration certificates, which have been issued according to national rules, will remain valid till 2026. To stay on the EAEU market after that, these medications will have to bring the registration dossiers into compliance with EAEU regulations and will have to be included into the EAEU’s single registry of registered medications.

The concept specifies that only medications with EAEU registration certificates must remain on the market in the EAEU member states as from 1 January 2026.

“The realization of the document approved by the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council is expected to ultimately increase the availability of safe and quality medications for citizens of the union’s countries,” the Eurasian Economic Commission added.
