EAEU leaders expected to sign agreements, Iran observer status at summit in St. Petersburg

MOSCOW, 17 December (BelTA) - Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries will sign a number of documents and grant Iran an observer status at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council to be held in St. Petersburg on 26 December, BelTA learned from the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). 
 
The parties are set to sign an agreement on a unified customs transit system of the EAEU and third party(ies), a protocol on amendments to the EAEU Treaty in part concerning a special mechanism when conducting investigations and making decisions on the application or non-application of special protective, anti-dumping and countervailing measures. 

The free trade agreement between the EAEU and its member states on the one hand and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the other and Iran’s status of an observer state to the EAEU are also on the agenda.  

The leaders are set to approve amendments to the action plan to form a common electricity market, discuss the status of the effort to harmonize the legislation in financial markets, the functioning of the single market for services and the implementation of liberalization plans for certain sectors of services in the EAEU.  

The heads of state are expected to consider the elimination of barriers, reduction of exemptions and restrictions in the internal market of the union in 2024, approve the amount of duty paid by economic entities when applying to the EAEU Court, and discuss the main areas of further development. 

The agenda also includes the matters of chairmanship of the Eurasian Economic Union bodies (Belarus will take over the chairmanship in 2025), the time and place of the next meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
