EAEU countries urged to jointly respond to food security challenges

SMOLEVICHI DISTRICT, 3 June (BelTA) – The EAEU member states need to mount a joint response to challenges in the field of food security, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the plenary session “Food Security of the Eurasian Economic Union,” BelTA has learned.

“This topic was chosen for a reason: food security is top priority for the modern world. This is a matter of social stability and, without exaggeration, the very existence of any nation and state. We realized how critical it is quite a long time ago, and the introduction of illegal sanctions against us convinced us that our decision to achieve self-sufficiency in staple foods was absolutely right. Watching power players destroying the established trade relations for political gains, other countries have also come to understand that they are hostages of such a destructive logic, they are dependent on foreign suppliers who can stop supplying critical products, be it planting material, equipment or food, at the behest of their governments, which is extremely dangerous. We in the EAEU know that food security is a common task that is becoming an essential component of integration,” said Roman Golovchenko.

He emphasized that the joint response to global challenges in agricultural production should be discussed at the highest level. “That is why we are jointly launching a new and very popular platform today,” the prime minister remarked.
