Diamond extraction prospects for cooperation between BelAZ, Russia's Arkhangelsk Oblast

MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – Cooperation between Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Belarusian automobile engineering company BelAZ has prospects involving diamond extraction, the press service of the Belarusian Industry Ministry quoted Igor Orlov, Governor of Russia's Arkhangelsk Oblast, as saying after a delegation of the Russian region visited the enterprise, BelTA has learned.

“Our cooperation has concrete figures to show for it and clear prospects involving diamond extraction. We will continue buying your unique vehicles and will naturally develop aftersales service, which is important,” Igor Orlov was quoted as saying.

As he was made familiar with the organization of manufacturing processes in the central assembly line shop and the shop dedicated to making superheavy vehicles, the Arkhangelsk Oblast Governor was quite interested in the vehicles BelAZ manufactures. He admitted that the scale of the manufacturing process was impressive.

Arkhangelsk Oblast and BelAZ have maintained economic ties for a long time. Over 80 BelAZ vehicles are used in the Russian region to extract limestone, bauxite, and diamonds. Those are mainly mine dump trucks with the carrying capacity of 45-130 tonnes.

Arkhangelsk Oblast is located in the north of Russia's European part. It occupies over 589,000km2, which is on par with the territories occupied by Ukraine or France. Arkhangelsk Oblast is home to 1.183 million people. Diamond deposits were discovered over there comparatively a short time ago. Arkhangelsk Oblast boasts 20% of Russia's diamond reserves. Preparations are in progress to start the commercial extraction of diamonds from the M.V. Lomonosov minefield. It is the world's third largest minefield in terms of approved reserves.

The Zhodino-based automobile engineering company BelAZ was founded in September 1948. In 2010 BelAZ was reincorporated into a public joint stock company (OAO). In September 2012 BelAZ became the managing company of BelAZ Holding. BelAZ is the world's top manufacturer of mine dump trucks with a large carrying capacity and an extremely large carrying capacity as well as other heavy transport equipment used by the mining industry and the civil engineering industry. In 2014 BelAZ operated a well-developed distribution network that comprised 58 entities, including the general distributor ZAO TD BelAZ, 29 dealerships, 26 service centers established by the company in Russia, CIS and non-CIS states, and one assembly enterprise.
