Brest considers twinning with Ukraine's Lvov

BREST, 12 July (BelTA) - Brest is considering concluding a twinning agreement with the Ukrainian city of Lvov, Best Mayor Aleksandr Rogachuk told the media, BelTA has learned.

“Twinning is, in principle, a public status. It is a platform for communication of, first of all, economic entities. It provides the opportunity to meet more often, seek closer ties. Now we are working on closer relationship with Lvov. Twinning with this city is interesting for us, must be mutually beneficial,” Aleksandr Rogachuk said. He added that Brest is also exploring the prospects of cooperation with Russia's Samara.

Brest maintains twin-town relations with 34 partners, three of them are Ukrainian: Odessa, Lutsk and Ivano-Frankovsk. Many of twinning partners are in Russia: all in all, 13 cities. “Among Russian twin towns we have the most productive trade and economic relations with Kaliningrad. Many factors contribute to this, including the geographic location. Such cooperation is an example showing that twinning relations can translate into real economic interaction. For example today we are hosting a delegation from Kaliningrad,” the mayor said.

These days Brest is hosting businessmen from Kaliningrad, among them are members of the public organization “Kaliningrad Community of Belarusians”. The goal of the visit is to strengthen cooperation with partners and pay tribute to the memory of Belarus' defenders. “We work very closely in business, in public affairs, carry out joint activities. This time we came to lay flowers at the monuments in the Brest Fortress and Drogichin District to honor the memory of the heroes. The 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus is an important date for the Belarusians and Russians. Every family has lost members in the Great Patriotic War: my grandfather, a native of Mogilev Oblast, went missing. As long as we live, we will remember those who lost their lives so that we could live in peace,” head of the Kaliningrad Community of Belarusians Svetlana Zezera said.

In January-May 2019 the trade between Brest and Russian regions amounted to $475.3 million, which was up 2.6% year-on-year. The export totaled $374.3 million. Brest's export to the city of Kaliningrad and Kaliningrad Oblast increased by approximately 6%, twice to Izhevsk and Udmurtia.
