BelNPP to take second unit off line for scheduled maintenance in November

MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) - Scheduled preventive maintenance will begin at the second power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) in November, BelNPP Director General Sergei Bobovich said in an interview to the STV TV channel on 5 October, BelTA has learned.

The work will continue until the end of the year. “This will be the second scheduled preventive maintenance before the year's end. We anticipate it will extend slightly into January, after which we will reconnect it to the grid. During this time, we will primarily carry out a partial refueling, with approximately a quarter of the fuel set to be replaced. Following that, we will resume operation,” Sergei Bobovich said.

After the second unit is brought back online, the first power unit of the BelNPP will be taken out for its own maintenance, which will already be its fourth major overhaul.

Regarding waste, the spent nuclear fuel will be sent to Russia for reprocessing. “The waste will be processed to achieve the necessary, reduced level of activity, after which, following a certain period, it will be returned to our country for permanent burial here. This is a common global practice. A site for this is currently being selected. The reprocessing process itself is very lengthy and will take decades,” the BelNPP director general said.
