BelNPP generates 33.5bn kWh of electricity

MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) - Since the connection of the first power unit to the unified power grid, the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) has generated 33.5 billion kWh of electricity, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich told the ONT TV channel.

Belarus has built a nuclear power plant for its own electricity consumption, Viktor Karankevich said. “With the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the country’s energy potential increased. We were ready to supply electricity to the neighboring countries, but all the electric energy produced by the Belarusian nuclear power plant is consumed in our country. Since the first unit was switched on, the plant has produced a total of 33.5 billion kWh of electricity. This has already made it possible to replace about 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas consumption,” the minister said.

He added that since the nuclear power plant was commissioned, in addition to reducing dependence on hydrocarbon fuel, i.e. the efforts to increase the country’s energy security, Belarus has been addressing reliability issues.

“This is an affordable environmentally friendly source of energy. This also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Most importantly, this meets the growing needs of the economy, the real sector and the households in electric energy,” the minister emphasized.
