MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – Aleksei Lukashevich, Deputy Director General for Research at the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research Sosny at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, commented on the main advantages of nuclear power as he attended a roundtable at BelTA.
"In terms of qualitative advantages, nuclear power is distinguished by its large and stable capacity in contrast to renewable energy and cost-effectiveness. It is also an alternative to replace fossil fuels, especially natural gas. In terms of environmental impact, it is actually green energy," Aleksei Lukashevich said.
He also explained the role of the Sosny institute in providing scientific support for the BelNPP project.
"We provide scientific support in terms of management of radioactive waste, spent fuel, safe operation and resource management of the NPP equipment, assessment of the impact on the environment and human health. We are also responsible for environmental monitoring, assessment of possible external natural and man-made impacts, emergency preparedness, physical and nuclear safety. We provide scientific support for the construction of radioactive waste management facilities too," Aleksei Lukashevich noted.
