MINSK, 15 July (BelTA) – Belarusian Railways and Latvian Railways have discussed the progress of electrifying the Polotsk-Daugavpils direction, the press center of Belarusian Railways told BelTA after the meeting of the heads of Belarusian Railways and Latvian Railways in Minsk on 15 July.
For the sake of raising the throughput of the strategic Belarusian-Latvian railway direction Belarusian Railways is busy developing the section Polotsk — the Latvian state border and the legs adjacent to Polotsk step by step, BelTA has been told. The construction of the second railway in the near-border section Bigosovo – Indra has been completed together with Latvian partners. It allows up to 35 pairs of trains to go through this section every day.
Representatives of Belarusian Railways said that the designing of the fourth stage, which provides for building the second railway in the Polotsk-Ropnyanskaya leg, is nearly finished. Apart from that, Belarusian Railways will continue working to develop the railway border checkpoint Bigosovo. The work is part of the program meant to develop railway border checkpoints at the state border of Belarus in 2007-2020, explained the press center.
As far as future prospects of the development of the infrastructure of the section are concerned, the appeal of the Belarusian-Latvian direction for transporting transit cargoes from Russia and Kazakhstan will be preserved and developed in particular thanks to the possible electrification of the line Smolensk – Vitebsk – Polotsk – Daugavpils – Riga.
At the meeting on 15 July the sides discussed results of the joint work to transport cargoes between Belarus and Latvia in 2013 and in January-May 2014, including transportation by container trains, prospects of transporting more cargoes like that, and results of the organization of passenger transportation between the two countries.
Latvian Railways is one of the most important partners of Belarus in international cargo transportation. In January-May 2014 Belarusian Railways transported 13.9 million tonnes of cargoes, 114.4% as against the same period of last year, between Belarus and Latvia, including transit from Russia, Kazakhstan to ports of Latvia and backwards.
