Belarusian Railways' container transportation up 25% in 2021

MINSK, 5 January (BelTA) – According to preliminary data, Belarusian Railways transported over 1.245 million containers in terms of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2021, up 25% from 2020, the Belarusian Railways press service told BelTA.

The volume of transit container transportation increased by 29% and amounted to about 930,000 TEUs, including the increase of 1.3 times in the communication China-Europe-China.

Currently, container trains connect 60 cities in China with 170 cities in 23 countries in Europe. On average, Belarusian Railways provides daily transit and terminal handling of about 25 container trains between China and Europe.

Last year Belarusian Railways also continued work to create necessary conditions to increase the volume of export shipments of products of Belarusian enterprises in containers.

Thus, in 2021 the volume of export shipments in containers increased by 14% and amounted, according to preliminary data, to more than 70,000 TEUs. Of them 24,000 TEUs were transported in the direction of China, or 105% as against 2020.

Development of export transportation and promotion of Belarusian products to foreign markets are among strategic priorities for Belarusian Railways.

Thanks to effective interaction with all participants of the transport services market and business contacts established with representatives of 15 regions of China, the delivery of products of Belarusian enterprises to this country is ensured within two weeks both to railway stations and further by motor transport to any point there, including as part of the last-mile solution.

In 2022, Belarusian Railways will continue work to develop transit traffic, including the use of infrastructure of all Belarusian-Polish border crossings.

Special attention will also be paid to further development of export transportation of products of economic entities of Belarus to foreign markets, primarily to China and the EAEU countries.
