Belarusian PM outlines main tasks for new light industry heads

MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) – Bellegprom enterprises and the light industry sector require systemic solutions to ensure their stable operation, Belarusian Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin told journalists following his report to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 15 September, BelTA has learned.
Following recent appointments at four light industry enterprises, journalists asked the prime minister what tasks were set for the new heads and what the development strategy for the domestic light industry is in general.

He noted that the country’s light industry is represented by the Belarusian state concern for production and sale of light industry goods Bellegprom and a large number of enterprises that are not affiliated with it. These include both state-owned and private business entities engaged in garment production, operating with varying degrees of success.

Major enterprises of the Bellegprom concern include OAO Minsk Leather Production Association, footwear factories, OAO Kamvol, Baranovichi Cotton Production Association, and Orsha Linen Mill. “As for Bellegprom, systemic solutions are needed there,” Aleksandr Turchin emphasized. “We have reviewed the work of these enterprises more than once, including at the level of the head of state. But unfortunately, it sometimes turns out that the provided state support measures ensure the stable operation of these enterprises for a relatively short period. After that, they have to approach the president again and ask for help.”

“The task of the concern’s new management is precisely to develop systemic measures,” he continued. “I am not talking about 20 or 30 years. That is probably impossible. But at least for the medium term: measures that are necessary for the stable operation of these enterprises.”

As was reported, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko approved the appointment of Nadezhda Lazarevich as the Chairwoman of the Belarusian state concern for production and sale of light industry goods Bellegprom on 13 October. As for Tatiana Lugina, who had been leading Bellegprom until now, she now heads OAO Kamvol.

The head of state noted that the situation in the concern is difficult and the industry needs to be rescued from its current condition. Separately, the president focused on the situation at OAO Kamvol.

“I visited Kamvol. Not just visited, but provided serious support at the time. We basically saved this enterprise from complete collapse when it was falling apart. We had to save it. Considerable funds were invested. I visited our leather enterprise in Gatovo multiple times. We seemed to have determined the course of action there. Turchin reported to me yesterday that the results there are not great. We will see in the near future. He says that the Baranovichi Cotton Production Association is now operating after many struggles and investments. In autumn, as usual, we will review the linen production and linen fabrics in Orsha, and, accordingly, the performance in flax production,” the head of state outlined the priorities the light industry subsectors.
