MOSCOW, 24 September (BelTA) – The experience of construction and operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is in demand abroad in projects of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom, BelTA learned from Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Viktor Karankevich.
Viktor Karankevich noted that the Belarusian nuclear power plant uses VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors. It is a modern and advanced reactor of Russian make that meets the highest safety requirements. Belarus was the first foreign location where Rosatom had implemented this design.
“It is the first foreign location. It has brought together quite a large number of construction workers. Over 9,000 construction workers, engineers, and people, who will have to operate the nuclear power plant later on, were present at the site when the project was being implemented. It also brought together tens of organizations, engineering schools, the scientific community of Belarus and Russia. It is the top project in the entire history of Belarusian-Russian relations in terms of the scale and in terms of the technology. Certainly, Belarus and specialists, who were employed to build this facility, have received unique experience. In the course of designing, building it and now in the course of operating and maintaining it,” Viktor Karankevich said.
He stressed that he was talking not only about the nuclear power plant itself but about the accompanying infrastructure. “Including the implementation of steps to integrate the Belarusian nuclear power plant into the country’s power grid. This experience is now in demand and is successfully implemented as part of Rosatom’s projects in other countries,” the deputy prime minister stated.
When asked about the purpose of Belarus’ taking part in the World Atomic Week, Viktor Karankevich said: “We need to demonstrate how professionally we know how not only build such complicated facilities together with Rosatom but also how we can now ensure reliable, efficient operation and maintenance of this facility. We don’t stay idle. We say that every time one can and should move further within the framework of development of the nuclear energy industry. And we can give hints about how this project was implemented in Belarus, what experience and competences we have acquired.”
According to the deputy prime minister, in this regard Belarus interacts with partners within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union and the CIS states. Belarus also maintains interaction with a number of other countries, for instance, with Hungary where a similar project to build a nuclear power plant with Rosatom’s assistance is being implemented. “A working group at the level of experts has been set up. They regularly interact and share experience within the framework of development of the nuclear energy industry,” Viktor Karankevich said.
“Many countries would like to gain our experience and learn, receive answers to individual questions concerning the development of the nuclear energy industry,” the deputy prime minister stressed.
BelTA reported earlier that Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to go on a working visit to the Russian Federation on 25-26 September. The head of state will take part in the international forum World Atomic Week held under the theme From a New Technological Paradigm to a New Worldview.
