MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – The fish farm Volma, Cherven District, Minsk Oblast intends to start producing 100 tonnes of sturgeon per year, BelTA learned from the company's Director Alexander Kulikovsky on 19 August.
The fish farm usually produces European carp, grass carp, silver carp, and catfish. Several years ago Volma started raising sturgeon fish. Alexander Kulikovsky explained that this kind of fish is rare in Belarus. “In the past we used to fish it in small lots. Today we netted the first large batch for the first time. We have to sell fresh sturgeon to shops at affordable prices. We intend to make 10-20 tonnes of sturgeon per annum initially. Later on we will raise the figure to 100 tonnes,” said the executive.
Since the demand for sturgeon on the Belarusian market is low, Volma intends to export some of it to Russia. “Markets to sell sturgeon are not limited. The Belarusian market is easy to saturate while Russia eagerly buys this fish,” noted Alexander Kulikovsky.
The public joint-stock company (OAO) Volma Fish Farm is one of the oldest enterprises in Minsk Oblast. The enterprise started making merchandise in 1932. The fish farm has its own fish-processing shop, this is why apart from fresh fish the fish farm Volma also offers fish fillet, mincemeat, and smoked fish.
