MINSK, 27 October (BelTA) – It is necessary to harvest corn as fast as possible, BelTA learned from Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Subbotin on 27 October.
The official said: “We've been working to finish the harvesting campaign and prepare for the next season's sowing campaign rather actively this year. Yesterday's instructions of the president will certainly make this process even more intensive. Today's conference call with the regions confirms it. We will compare notes. We will determine what problems there are, where more efforts are needed. We have sufficient fuel and fertilizers. Agricultural workers are in their places. The machines are working in the field. If they break, they get promptly fixed. A database of missing parts has been created.”
Potato harvesting has been nearly finished in Belarus. “Nearly two thirds of the area under grain maize has been processed. The harvest projections are rather optimistic. We have already stored over 1.1 million tonnes of corn. We expect we will add hundreds of thousands of tonnes to this figure. Apart from that, we've already gathered in over 2.6 million tonnes of sugar beet. We are actively harvesting vegetables. It is necessary to keep up the pace and finish most of the work within the specified timeframe (by 7 November),” the deputy prime minister noted.
Aleksandr Subbotin stressed it is necessary to harvest corn as fast as possible. “All the harvesting capabilities have been mobilized. We are trying to gather in as much as possible during the current ideal weather period,” he added.
The official pointed out that this year's corn yield had increased. “Due to the climate change, warmer weather corn farming in Belarus is becoming more comfortable. This crop occupies a decent niche in our food pie,” he noted.
