MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) - According to Belarus’ National Sustainable Development Strategy for the period until 2040, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to be implemented across nearly all sectors of the national economy, Head of Technical Rate Setting and Standardization Department at the State Standardization Committee of Belarus Oksana Grishkevich said during a roundtable discussion within the international Digital Expo 2025 held in Minsk, BelTA learned from the press service of Belarus’ State Standardization Committee.

The roundtable discussion on AI standardization was organized by the State Standardization Committee and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus.

“Our country is only taking its first steps toward artificial intelligence, but the National Sustainable Development Strategy until 2040 envisions its use in nearly all sectors of the economy,” Oksana Grishkevich stressed. “We are currently developing regulations through technical standards, as legislation to strictly govern this area is still being formed.”

Currently, Belarus has 12 standards in place for unmanned vehicles related to artificial intelligence. Standards for management systems in this area are also being developed, along with several others supported by UNDP experts, which are expected to be approved by the end of this year. A model law “On Artificial Intelligence Technologies”, adopted by the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly on 24 April 2025, was drafted by the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The institute is continuing its work on national legislation in this area.

Oksana Grishkevich also noted that a key expert platform to exchange views, share practical experience, and reach consensus will be the Belarusian Technical Committee on Standardization, currently being established at the initiative of the United Institute of Informatics Problems, and the Interstate Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence.

Experts from Russia and China also shared their experience in AI technical regulation during the roundtable discussion. Nearly all speakers emphasized that today’s marketing narratives portray AI as a universal solution to all problems, making it especially important to develop rational approaches based on expert consensus.
