Belarus set to harvest 10.3m tonnes of grain, including corn and rapeseed in 2024

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) - This year, the rapeseed harvest was good, above last year, Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun said at a press conference "Harvesting campaign 2024: First results and achievements", BelTA learned.  

According to experts and scientists, the harvest of grain and leguminous crops, including corn, is projected to amount to 9.2 million tonnes. “This year, the rapeseed harvest was good, at 1.1 million tonnes, which was above last year's. All in all, we look to gather 10.3 million tonnes this year, Vladimir Grakun said. Farmers are on the home stretch of harvest. 96% of the areas has already been removed. Almost all regions of the country, with the exception of some districts of Vitebsk Oblast and Mogilev Oblast, completed the harvesting of grain and leguminous crops. 

As of 20 August, Belarus has already harvested 7.629 million tonnes of grain (including rapeseed), including 6.555 million tonnes of grain and leguminous crops, 1.074 million tonnes of rapeseed. "We look set to harvest 30,000 tonnes of spring rapeseed and more than 50,000 tonnes of buckwheat and millet," Vladimir Grakun said. “Small farms are expected to contribute over 200,000 tonnes of grain (277,000 tonnes in 2023) and household plots - around 80,000 tonnes. According to experts and scientists, the harvest of corn is projected at 9.2 million tonnes. All in all, the harvest is forecast at 10.3 million tonnes.” 

"Harvesting of early potato got underway. New vegetables are already supplied to our stores, and we can already buy home-grown vegetables," the minister added.

Harvesting campaign is an important and final stage of the whole complex of technological works on cultivating agricultural crops. The tasks for the harvesting campaign were set in late 2023 at a time of the 2024 harvest planning and winter planting. The task was set to aim for 11 million tonnes of grain, including rapeseed.
