Belarus sells first batch of butter to Georgia via commodity exchange

MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) - The first transaction to sell butter to Georgia has been concluded at the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE). The batch totaled 8 tonnes, BelTA learned from the BUCE press service.

Until now, Georgia primarily purchased forestry products from Belarus, including lumber, sleepers, poles, and stakes, and whole and skimmed milk powder. In turn, Georgian companies supplied raw materials and semi-finished poultry, pork, and beef products through exchange trading.

The expansion of the commodity range in the exchange exports to Georgia is expected to encourage new buyers from the country to join BUCE and create prerequisites for further increases in mutual trade.

"In 2024, exchange trade with Georgia almost quadrupled to reach $12.7 million. A total of 27 new Georgian companies started using the exchange mechanism. But the limited range of goods involved in transactions did not allow Belarus and Georgia to realize their full cooperation potential in the exchange trading. For 2025 we set the task to introduce additional product categories that would be of interest to participants from Belarus and Georgia. The transaction to purchase butter by a Georgian company is a practical result of this work, which BUCE carries out in close cooperation with domestic exporters," the BUCE press service said.

In 2024, a total of 63,000 tons of butter were sold through BUCE, which was 6.6 times more year-on-year. Companies from eight countries imported this product via the exchange. Residents of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan ranked among the top three buyers.

Founded in 2004, the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange conducted its first trading session in June 2005. BUCE is one of the largest commodity exchanges in Eastern Europe. Its main function is to assist Belarusian enterprises with export and foreign companies with entering the Belarusian market. BUCE sells a wide range of metal, forestry and agricultural products, industrial and consumer goods.
