Belarus-Russia Union State mulls over mechanism to subsidize passenger air travel

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) - The Belarus-Russia Union State is working on a mechanism to subsidize passenger air travel, Chairman of the Union State PA Commission on Transport Yevgeny Moskvichev told the media on 23 May, BelTA has learned.

“For example, if we take the air service between Minsk and Pskov, then if the fare turns out to be expensive, then it should be subsidized by the two countries - that is, by the Union State. For this purpose, we are considering this issue today and will instruct the two transport ministries to find a common formula and allocate funds from the budgets of Russia and Belarus to subsidize ticket prices by September,” Yevgeny Moskvichev said. “For example, today we have airplanes flying from Moscow to Vladivostok. A ticket costs no more than RUB3,000. Everything else is subsidized by the state. We do this so that our people can communicate, move around, get familiar with cities, learn about the country’s history. That is why we have been given such instructions. The presidents support this idea, and I think that we will find the necessary formula this year.”

“I believe that the residents of Russia and Belarus should communicate more,” the chairman of the commission added.

Minsk is hosting a joint meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Budget, Taxes and Financial Market, the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Industry and Trade, the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Economic Policy and the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Transport. The participants of the meeting are expected to discuss the development of inter-regional and cross-border communication by rail and road transport on most popular destinations, the development of a mechanism for subsidizing international air transportation, the formation of passenger tariffs on rail transport in communication between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. The agenda of the meeting also envisages issues related to the formation and performance of the Union State budget, development of a common scientific and technological space of the Union State, preparation of an updated approximate list of priority scientific, technological and innovation programs and projects of the Union State, organization of accounting and management of the Union State property.
