Belarus, Russia complete work to form common electricity market

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have completed the work to establish a common electricity market, State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Dmitry Mezentsev told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“The decisions that will be made tomorrow [at the meeting of the Union State Supreme State Council on 6 December] are a testimony to the success of integration. This will signify the completion of the work on the formation of a common energy market of the Union State,” said Dmitry Mezentsev. “When the commission started working in December 2018, it was hard to believe that it would be possible to reach an interstate agreement in such a short period of time. This will mean a different level of energy security for Belarus, it will also benefit the energy sector of the two countries.”

The participants of the meeting are set to approve the Union State Treaty on the Unified Electricity Market. “This is a mutually beneficial agreement that will allow minimizing losses in energy grids, making tariffs more balanced, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of energy to households and the economy. The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was also a factor in this work. This result became possible due to the system of relations that are based on trust, camaraderie and consideration of each other's interests,” he said.

Dmitry Mezentsev added that interstate relations will not always be rosy. Indeed, a buyer might argue with a seller; economic entities may also have disputes with each other. “There is no escaping that if we want to achieve tangible results. And we do achieve them,” he emphasized.
