YEREVAN, 1 October (BelTA) - The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) needs to switch from imports to exports and be more active in developing its competencies and technologies, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Yerevan, Armenia on 1 October, BelTA has learned.
According to Roman Golovchenko, the EAEU should take a proactive stance on international positioning, maximize the use of the principle of integration for this purpose, build a sustainable infrastructure of trade and economic cooperation with friendly jurisdictions. “The past 30 years have proved that our economically developed neighbors view us exclusively as a source of raw materials and a capacious market for their goods. If we want to reverse this trend, we need to switch from imports to exports, to actively develop our competencies and technologies in the EAEU. Our entire economic and trade policy should be aimed at achieving this result,” the Belarusian head of government said.
In this context, the prime minister drew attention to the need to improve the mechanisms of cooperation with third countries with the observer-state status. “We need to act more efficiently on the track of concluding agreements on preferential mutual trade with key economies in the region. In particular, it is imperative to steed up the finalization of negotiations on the establishment of free trade zones with the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and also a temporary trade agreement with Mongolia. It is also necessary to take a fresh look at the potential for cooperation with other Asian countries and southern African countries,” Roman Golovchenko said.
The dynamic development of dialogue with ideologically like-minded integration associations, primarily the EAEU-SCO-BRICS fully meets the common interests of the EAEU member countries, the Belarusian head of government said.
