Belarus, Pakistan to halve freight delivery times

ISLAMABAD, 26 November (BelTA) - Belarus and Pakistan will halve freight delivery times, Belarusian Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Lyakhnovich told the media on the sidelines of the talks between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan in Islamabad on 26 November, BelTA has learned.

According to Aleksei Lyakhnovich, logistics with Pakistan is complicated, as goods are delivered by sea through the Russian ports in St. Petersburg. Following the talks between the two leaders in Islamabad, the parties concluded an agreement on international road service.

“We expect results from the agreement, because we come to the south of Pakistan by sea, and will be reaching the north of Pakistan by road,” the minister explained. “This year Belarus joined the memorandum of understanding on the development of the corridor Belarus-Russia-Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan. Today's agreement is a continuation of that memorandum. Road transport is more expensive than sea transport, but at the same time it moves much faster, in fact half as fast as sea transport.”

In the future, Belarus and Pakistan would also like to establish a railroad service, in which case logistics would become more profitable. However, Afghanistan is not ready for such a move yet.

According to Aleksei Lyakhnovich, the railroad corridor issue is under discussion, it is most likely to be addressed after 2030.
