MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) - Since the state program Energy Saving for 2021-2025 was launched, the energy intensity of the gross domestic product went down by 2.6% over 2020, Vitaly Kretsky, Director of the Energy Efficiency Department, said at the board meeting to review performance of companies affiliated with the Industry Ministry in 2024, BelTA learned.
The key target to reduce GDP energy intensity has been met. The majority of state administration bodies, regional executive committees and the Minsk City Executive Committee have achieved the energy saving targets set for 2024. The volume of fuel and energy resources saved in the country amounted to 606,400 tonnes of fuel equivalent thanks to energy saving measures, and the share of local energy, excluding nuclear energy, in the gross fuel and energy mix amounted to 17.1%, which is above the target of 16%.
“In 2024, despite the growth of gross energy consumption by about 1.8 million tonnes of fuel equivalent over 2015, we have increased the share of local energy resources,” Vitaly Kretsky emphasized.
The head of state and the government have set a task to maximize the pellet use in the country's energy mix. Certain steps have already been taken for this purpose. In particular, a number of regulatory documents have been adopted to reduce the cost of wood fuel pellets for the real sector of the economy.
According to the director of the department, the main tool to scale the use of this type of fuel in the energy mix of the country is to continue the construction and reconstruction of energy sources, primarily in the housing and utilities services and energy systems. This will subsequently lead not only to increased efficiency in the use of energy resources but also help reduce the cost of heat energy.
“Last year, the conversion of low-efficiency facilities to wood fuel pellets reduced the cost of heat energy at these facilities by up to 47%. This resulted in reduced expenses on heat energy subsidies for households,” the director of the department said.
Vitaly Kretsky focused on the measures to increase the economic attractiveness of pellets. In particular, the Ministry of Housing and Public Utilities and organizations affiliated with it, companies affiliated with the Architecture and Construction Ministry and the Energy Ministry were offered a reduced price for pellets: Br160 per tonne. A reduced price of Br50 per tonne was set for households. Since April 2024, households can buy Belarus-made pellet-fueled boilers and burners under favorable terms and on credit. In December 2024, a decree was signed to provide citizens with up to 40% compensation for the cost of boiler equipment running on pellets.
Belarus has created a solid foundation for the growth of demand for wood fuel pellets both in the national economy and among households, Vitaly Kretsky summarized.
