Belarus encourages EAEU to promote trade partnership with Global South countries

ALMATY, 2 February (BelTA) – Countries of the Eurasian Economic Union should pay close attention to promoting trade partnership with Global South countries. Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko made the statement at a session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, BelTA has learned.

Roman Golovchenko said: “Over the years substantial progress has been achieved in advancing trade and economic cooperation with promising countries and regions. An agreement on free trade between countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran was signed on 25 December 2023. Belarus will ratify the agreement on a tight schedule so that this agreement could come into force. I hope our partners in the Eurasian Economic Union will do the same. We expect active negotiations with the UAE, Indonesia, and Egypt to continue.”

In his words, time has come for the Eurasian Economic Commission to revise the list of third countries, with which the Eurasian Economic Union would be interested in signing preferential trade agreements. The list was compiled quite a long time ago and needs to be updated taking into account the current international situation. Close attention should be paid to Global South countries in this regard, the Belarusian prime minister underlined.

“We have repeatedly talked about the fundamental importance of international positioning of the Eurasian Economic Union. I am convinced that the Belarus president’s initiative in favor of holding a EAEU-SCO-BRICS summit has never been more important than it is today. We expect the Eurasian Economic Commission to do quality work on the matter,” the Belarusian head of government concluded.
