Belarus' electricity export up by seven times in 2018

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – In 2018 Belarus increased the export of electricity by more than seven times to 1 billion kWh, BelTA learned from Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich before a session of the ministry's board on 22 February.

The official said: “In 2018 over 1 billion kWh was exported, more than seven times up from 2017. We have to do as well in 2019. The Baltic states remain the priority market.”

The possibility of exporting electricity to various countries connected via interstate electric lines – Ukraine and Russia – is under consideration. “The market of the Baltic states remains a high priority, but everything will depend on the state of prices on foreign markets,” the energy minister explained.

Viktor Karankevich reminded that in 2018 for the first time since Belarus gained independence, the country did not import electricity. Electricity import was substituted with electricity generated using domestic energy sources at a lesser cost.
