Belarus’ share of settlements with EAEU states in national currencies reaches 95%

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - Belarus carries out 95% of settlements with the EAEU countries in national currencies, Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus Roman Golovchenko said in an interview with the First News TV channel, BelTA has learned.

In the year of its presidency in the EAEU, Belarus pays special attention to increasing the share of settlements between the EAEU countries in national currencies. “There is no problem with our country – 95% of our foreign trade settlements with the EAEU countries are performed in national currencies. These are the Russian ruble, Kazakhstani tenge, Belarusian ruble. 95% is a high figure, so here, I believe, we have fulfilled our task for Belarus,” Roman Golovchenko said.

He believes that this figure may be higher. “What do we need to do for it? There are several approaches. The right and fastest one is to ensure the pricing of goods and services of the EAEU countries in national currencies. Then, of course, there will be a natural driver for the growth of settlements in national currencies, i.e. to move away from pegging prices in the EAEU market to US dollars, euros, yuan and so on. As soon as prices are displayed in national currencies, this will naturally stimulate settlements. All our colleagues understand the importance of this process, and we purposefully follow this path, the chairman of the Board of the National Bank said.

These and other topics will be discussed on the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Forum, which will be held in Minsk on 26-27 June. The main theme of the forum is “Eurasian Economic Integration Strategy: Outcomes and Prospects”. The event is focused on the participation of heads of large, medium and small businesses of the member states and third countries, heads and representatives of public authorities of the EAEU countries, heads and members of governments of third countries, representatives of international organizations interested in developing interaction within the union.
