Belarus among Europe’s top three with cheapest electricity prices for households

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - Belarus is in the top three in Europe with cheapest electricity prices for household consumers, BelTA learned the press service of the Economy Ministry of Belarus.

Since the establishment of the presidency in Belarus, one of the biggest social and economic achievements in the country was the sustainable and balanced development of the national fuel and energy complex. Over the years of independence, a lot of work has been done to extend the gas supply networks in the country. All regional centers, cities, towns, more than 3,600 rural communities have been provided with gas. The total length of gas networks exceeds 67,000 km. In terms of gas supply, Belarus is one of the leaders in the post-Soviet space.

"In 2020, Belarus implemented a large-scale infrastructure investment project to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant, which made it possible to significantly reduce the country's dependence on imported fuel. Since its connection to the grid, the BelNPP has generated more than 35 billion kWh of electricity, the ministry added. "Belarus continues to actively use its own fuel and energy resources. In 2021-2023, the country commissioned 41 energy sources running on local fuel and energy, another 54 are planned to be built in 2024-2025."

Renewable energy has been gaining momentum in Belarus. Its share in the total electricity production has increased by more than 7.5 times since 2010. A convincing proof of the success of the policy was the third place of Belarus in the ranking of European countries with the cheapest electricity prices for household consumers (Kazakhstan ranks first, Russia – second; the most expensive electricity is in Denmark).
