Madrid Open: Victoria Azarenka misses out on quarterfinal

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 17 Victoria Azarenka failed to reach the Madrid Open quarterfinal, losing to world number 33 Amanda Anisimova of the United States, 1-6, 4-6, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian went off to a good start at the Madrid Open defeating world number 39 Victorija Golubic of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Victoria Azarenka then saw off Slovenia's world number 24 Tamara Zidansek, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Victoria Azarenka reached the Madrid Open final twice, losing to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in 2011 and to Serena Williams of the United States in 2012. Last year the Madrid Open was won by Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus who lost to Amanda Anisimova in the opener this time.

At the start of the men's event in the Spanish capital Belarus' world number 48 Ilya Ivashka lost to world number 63 Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.
