MINSK, 1 September (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 53 Ilya Ivashka won the US Open first round against world number 91 Tennys Sandgren of the United States, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-4, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next face Canada's world number 58 Vasek Pospisil.
Belarus' world number 82 Egor Gerasimov lost to Poland's world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz, 3-6, 4-6, 3-6.
In the women's singles world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka needed three sets to defeat Serbia's world number 94 Nina Stojanovic, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-0. The Belarusian will next play Slovenia's world number 40 Tamara Zidansek
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 19, moved into the second round after taking down World No.60 Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-0. In round two Victoria Azarenka will take on world number 99 Jasmine Paolini of Italy.
Belarus' world number 90 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Kazakhstan's World No.20 Elena Rybakina, 2-6, 3-6, in the opening round.
