MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) - Despite the situation with COVID-19, Belarusian athletes continue training and urge everyone to keep their spirits up, BelTA learned from the Sport and Tourism Ministry.
“Now it is very important for all of us to unite, to endure, to wait out these difficult times and to do our favorite things with renewed vigor,” champion of the 2016 Olympic Games trampoline gymnast Uladzislau Hancharou said. He expressed support for Belarusian doctors who are fighting the infection. “I would like to wish our doctors mental and physical strength. Their role is now of paramount importance. We need to observe safety measures, if possible keep a distance from each other, take care not only of ourselves and our loved ones but also of people around us. In my opinion, it is important to stay positive, and stay away from depression,” the Olympic champion stressed.
The champion of the 2nd European Games, javelin thrower Tatsiana Khaladovich noted that athletes continue to prepare for the Summer Olympics, doing a lot of work every day. She added, however, that doctors and nurses are going through much harder times. “They are on the front line today. A lot depends on their professionalism, human qualities. We need to support them in word and deed. We must not panic. I am confident that we will cope with this infection,” Tatsiana Khaladovich said.

“In boxing some give up when they allow a heavy punch. We are currently in a situation when we cannot give up,” champion of the 2nd European Games Dzmitry Asanau said. In his words, everyone should take a serious approach to his or her health, follow medical advice, which is to wash hands regularly and practise social distancing, and also remember to do physical exercises and sport.

As for today, 72 Belarusian athletes competing in 15 sports have qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Olympic qualifying tournaments have been suspended in the light of the COVID-19 spread. Belarusians hope to earn a few dozens more berths once the qualifiers resume.
