MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) - Director of the Radiobiology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), PhD in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Igor Cheshik outlined the current research areas of the NASB in a recent episode of BelTA’s Nation Speaks project.

The institute’s research activities cover several key areas.

The first area is studying the effects of low-dose radiation on cells, the body as a whole, and individual organs and systems. “Using experimental methods, we obtain preliminary data on threshold doses that do not cause significant pathological changes and that do not pose a risk to human health,” Igor Cheshik emphasized.

The second area is agricultural. “We monitor soils in affected areas to determine the feasibility of bringing them back into economic use. If the land is already being used, we study how actively different crops accumulate radioactive isotopes. Based on the radiochemical composition of the soil and the level of contamination, we can reasonably recommend or, conversely, rule out growing certain crops, predicting in advance that the final product will be clean,” he noted.

The third area is environmental. Scientists work with food products and environmental components: air, water, water reservoir, and bottom sediments.

The fourth area is economic activity. The institute operates an accredited laboratory that is the only one of its kind in the Republic of Belarus for a number of analyses. “Food producers and various social organizations work with us. We conduct high-quality tests for radionuclide content in feed, soil, food products, and other materials, issuing reports that carry the force of regulatory documents,” Igor Cheshik added.

The export of powdered milk is currently growing actively. “Initially, the main destination was China. Now a new direction has been added - North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia). This decision was supported following the president’s visit to the region. Exports of powdered dairy products, whey, milk, and cream to these countries are increasing. Our key producers: Molochny Mir, Bellakt, Savushkin Product, Babushkina Krynka regularly rely on us for their analyses. We conduct tests and issue reports in accordance with regulatory requirements, as the laboratory has the appropriate accreditation,” Igor Cheshik noted.
