MFA: Belarus is open to global dialogue on Chernobyl
MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta took part in a wreath-laying ceremony on 26 April at the memorial signs To the Victims of Chernobyl and the Hiroshima Peace Stone to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, BelTA has learned.
As a sign of remembrance, sorrow, and respect for the heroism of the liquidators, representatives of the embassies of Russia, Ukraine, and Japan, as well as leadership from the UN country team and the CIS Executive Committee, laid flowers together with employees of the Emergencies Ministry.

The event was timed to coincide with the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, proclaimed in 2016 at Belarus’ initiative during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly under the Belarusian resolution on the long-term consequences of the Chernobyl accident. In that resolution, the General Assembly proposed that all member states, relevant UN system institutions and other international organizations, as well as civil society, observe this day.
