MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – The 9th Expert Meeting on Statistics for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is taking place in Geneva under the auspices of the Conference of European Statisticians. Organized by the UNECE, the event has brought together representatives of national statistical services, international organizations, and the scientific community. At the event Belarus shared its experience in effective monitoring of the SDGs, the press service of the National Statistical Committee of Belarus told BelTA.

Participants of the meeting focus on matters of political support for SDG monitoring, development of interagency coordination, effective presentation of statistical data, use of geospatial information as well as analysis of interconnections between SDG indicators.

The Belarusian side was represented at the meeting by Head of the Central Office for International Cooperation and Statistical Information Dissemination of the National Statistical Committee Yelena Kondratenko. During a session dedicated to political support for SDG monitoring and stakeholder engagement she shared Belarus’ experience regarding the coordinating role of state statistics in the integration of global and national SDG indicators.

“The effectiveness of SDG monitoring in Belarus is ensured by a combination of high-level political commitment, a clearly defined institutional mandate, sustainable interagency coordination, and a developed digital infrastructure for data collection and dissemination. The established SDG information resources clearly demonstrate how digitization of processes and a clear framework for interaction between partners make it possible to create a sustainable SDG monitoring system with a high level of data availability and its practical use in the process of making management decisions,” emphasized the official.

The Belarusian representative expressed confidence in the universality of the proposed approach. “We consider this approach as a practical model that can be adapted by other countries to organize their own mechanisms for coordinating SDG monitoring and engaging stakeholders,” Yelena Kondratenko summarized.

The Belarusian side’s presentation was highly appreciated by those present as an example of an effective organization of a national SDG monitoring system that combines institutional mechanisms and modern digital solutions.
