Lukashenko urges PM, National Bank chief to rethink approach on arms modernization
MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) - Thought must be given on how to fund new and necessary weaponry for Belarus. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko raised the matter during a meeting to review the results of the comprehensive inspection of the Belarusian Armed Forces, BelTA has learned.
“The prime minister and the chairman of the National Bank also need to seriously rethink their approach. Because we can demand from them [the military], but there were isolated cases where commanders would say: 'Let the president find out that our equipment is not ready, that something has broken down, that something is wrong.' Equipment must be constantly modernized. That is true. It needs to be upgraded,” the head of state said.
In this regard, Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled his recent visit to DPRK and his talks with the country's leader, Kim Jong Un. “When I was in Korea [you know, the people there are not wealthy, but look at how they work!], I said to Kim Jong Un: 'Listen, do you realize how expensive this [the development and production of various types of weaponry] is?' Of course, he said he understands, but added: 'I have no other choice, I have to defend the land'”.“So we need to think how to allocate the necessary funding, particularly for new weaponry that is essential for us,” the Belarusian president emphasized.
At the same time, Aleksandr Lukashenko urged a thoughtful approach to these matters. “When we were reviewing matters before the special military operation, I became convinced that some chiefs in the Defense Ministry did not think clearly. They proposed spending billions of dollars on aircraft, helicopters and other hardware. I told them: 'A plane or helicopter gives you one or two hours of combat. You lift off, you get hit.' Current events have proven that to be true.”
“I'm not saying that drones will solve all problems on our land or that they will be used in combat the way they are in Ukraine. No, our situation is different. But the fact that drones pose a clear threat to us is undeniable," the Belarusian leader added.
