MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has pardoned 250 convicts on humanitarian grounds, BelTA learned from the press service of the head of state.

“The president made a decision to pardon a number of individuals convicted of extremist crimes. First and foremost, the head of state was traditionally guided by the principle of humanism. And, of course, he took into account appeals received from the mothers, wives, and close relatives of the convicts,” the press service reported.

“It should also be emphasized that all appeals were thoroughly reviewed by a relevant commission headed by the prosecutor general before being submitted to the president. When making the decision, the head of state also considered the opinion of this commission’s members. As a result, a decision was made to pardon 250 individuals. The state grants all of them the right to a new chapter in their lives,” the press service said.
