MOSCOW, 3 September (BelTA) – Russia views the attempt to raise the question of Belarus with the UN Security Council as interference into domestic affairs, Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a briefing on 3 September, BelTA has learned.

“It is obvious that the post-election situation in Belarus poses no threat to the world peace and security. It is these matters and no others that are the responsibility of the Security Council. We view the indirect attempt to raise this question with the UN Security Council using such roundabout ways as Arria-formula meetings, as blatant interference into the domestic affairs of a sovereign state,” Maria Zakharova emphasized.

She also commented on the actions of Warsaw and called them an undisguised intervention into Belarus' domestic affairs. “The Polish authorities continue their blatant interference into the domestic affairs of the Republic of Belarus. Warsaw is putting pressure on Minsk telling it what to do and openly supports, including financially and through affiliated non-governmental organizations, Belarusian opposition forces,” Maria Zakharova said.

She went on saying that Poland is using its propaganda to influence the public opinion in Belarus. It also harbors leaders of street protests. “We are calling on Warsaw to stick to the universally recognized norms of international law and to drop its attempts to undermine the sovereignty of the neighboring state using the tools that are unacceptable in international relations, including support for anti-government rallies and building on its territory a financial and organizational base for the forces that are acting outside the legal framework,” Maria Zakharova added.
