Ruginienė: Lithuania may consider Coale's proposal to hold talks with Belarus at deputy minister level

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) - Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has stated that Vilnius may consider the proposal of U.S. Special Envoy John Coale and hold talks with Belarus at the deputy minister level, Lithuanian media reported.

According to her, several conditions must be met before resuming such dialogue.

Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Juozas Olekas said that the possibility of negotiations between high-ranking officials of Lithuania and Belarus would depend on the progress in communication at the technical level. According to him, Vilnius will not be able to avoid a dialogue with Minsk. "If we want to solve problems, contacts are inevitable. There is no other way. But, as I said, mutual understanding must come first," he said.

Earlier, John Coale called on Vilnius to start a dialogue with Minsk. He also expressed the United States’ interest in potash fertilizers from Belarus. In an interview with a Lithuanian media outlet, John Coale noted that Belarusian potash fertilizers could be very useful to the United States and suggested supplying them via Lithuania. The special envoy expressed the hope that Lithuania would agree to hold talks with Belarus at the deputy minister level.
