MP: Belarus, Vietnam share deep and robust inter-parliamentary ties

MINSK, 13 April (BelTA) - Belarus has developed very extensive and robust inter-parliamentary ties with Vietnam, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Sergei Rachkov told the media before a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Republic of Belarus, Nguyen Van Trung, BelTA has learned.

Vietnam is a key partner for Belarus in Southeast Asia. The two countries have long-standing historical relations. Positive dynamics continue to this day, primarily thanks to the good relations between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and the top leadership of Vietnam.

“We have good trade. Intergovernmental commissions are working. Our goods are in demand in Vietnam,” Sergei Rachkov noted. “We are interested in Vietnam as a very large market for Belarusian goods and services, but we understand that trade and economic relations are a two-way street, and we are also interested in seeing Vietnamese goods widely represented in the Belarusian market.”

According to the MP, Belarusian trucks, tractors, and agricultural machinery are in demand in Vietnam. Vietnam is also interested in the educational services that Belarus provides. Belarusian MPs support all these projects through contacts with their colleagues and discuss them during meetings of the friendship groups established in the parliaments of the two countries.

“We have very extensive and robust inter-parliamentary ties with Vietnam. We exchange visits at a high level,” Sergei Rachkov said. He recalled that last year, Speaker of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko, on the instruction of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, visited Vietnam. He participated not only in the celebratory events marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Independence Day but also in the preparation of several economic projects.

Not long ago, the Belarusian side hosted a friendship group from the Vietnamese parliament, the MP continued. The parties held very thorough negotiations focusing on trade and economic cooperation and humanitarian interaction. MPs actively participate in events organized by the House of Friendship, particularly those concerning Vietnamese matters.

There are also big plans for the future, Sergei Rachkov noted. “We have received an invitation to visit the Vietnamese Parliament. We will take advantage of this kind invitation. But first and foremost, of course, we must work on implementing the agreements reached at the highest level and within the friendship groups,” he said. “The process is moving forward positively, and we consider, I emphasize once again, Vietnam as a strategic, important partner not only for the Republic of Belarus but also for the Eurasian Economic Union: a free trade agreement has been signed between the EAEU and Vietnam.”

The MP noted that Belarus is interested in virtually all aspects of its relationship with Vietnam. Importantly, this country is an influential political player, at least in its region, and in the United Nations.
“We engage with Vietnam in international organizations, not only the UN but also those of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,” the MP said pointing to the political support that Vietnam provides to Belarus. “Belarus also offers its support to Vietnam in international organizations,” he added.

Tourism ties are gaining momentum, Sergei Rachkov noted. Direct air service has been established. Belarusians fly to vacation in this country, which has excellent climatic conditions. Belarus is also interested in receiving more tourists from Vietnam. “I am confident that our MPs are working on this issue, on the development of human relations between our peoples,” Sergei Rachkov said highlighting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a form of people's diplomacy.

“People-to-people ties are highly valuable, especially in this turbulent time. It is better to rely on trusted friends. And Vietnam for Belarus is precisely such a trusted friend,” the MP emphasized.
