MINSK, 8 April (BelTA) – The active use of information and communication technologies has become a defining trait of modern society. In Belarus, the share of Internet users has grown by 10.4% since 2020, reaching 95.5% in 2025, Chairwoman of the National Statistical Committee of Belarus (Belstat) Inna Medvedeva told the Economy of Belarus magazine.
Data from a regular household sample survey conducted by Belstat show that over the past five years the country has witnessed steady positive changes in living standards and quality of life. Since 2020, the share of people with average per capita incomes below the subsistence minimum budget has fallen by more than a quarter. This is the best figure since Belarus gained independence.
“The rise in living standards has led to changes in the consumer behavior of Belarusians, which is reflected not only in a lower share of spending on food, but also in an improved diet. For example, consumption of bread and potatoes has decreased, while the table now has more meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and berries,” Inna Medvedeva noted.
The reduction in the share of food spending has increased families’ financial capacity to purchase non-food items and has had a positive impact on saving activity. The number of households able to save money is growing steadily: in 2025, three quarters of them reported having savings. People’s own assessment of their financial situation has also shifted. In 2025, one in five households said things had gotten better.
These observations have been carried out by state statistics bodies in all regions and Minsk since 1995. Every year, a sample of 6,000 households is formed by randomly selecting their addresses. The survey is conducted in 115 districts and covers various categories and socio-demographic groups.
