One of the largest punitive operations conducted by the Nazis in Belarus during the Great Patriotic War took place in Kirovsk District, Mogilev Oblast on 15 June 1942. On that day, the Nazis destroyed the village of Borki and several surrounding villages together with their inhabitants. More than 2,000 civilians were burned down and shot. The memorial complex in the village of Borki in Kirovsk District was reopened on 20 June after renovations. The opening of the memorial commemorating the burned villages of Mogilev Oblast was was of the main events in Mogilev Oblast in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the 78th anniversary of the tragedy of the village of Borki.
