Young people encouraged to promote Olympism

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) - Young people should contribute to the development of Olympism, IOC President Thomas Bach said in his address to the International Forum for Young Olympians in Moscow, BelTA learned from the press service of the NOC of Belarus.

The head of the international Olympic movement noted that the topics on the Moscow agenda reflect the close connection between sport and education. You represent the future of sport, you are the next generation who will adjust the Olympic values. We hope you will tell us how sport can make an even greater contribution to making the world a better place, Thomas Bach said.

“At the forum we will discuss many issues related to the Olympic movement. The main task of Olympism is to make you a better person through sport. We would love to give you the knowledge you can use in your future career. I would like you to make friends with each other in Moscow, to learn a lot of new and useful things," said Stanislav Pozdnyakov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The International Forum for Young Olympians brought young athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 representing the regions of Russia and also the national Olympic committees of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Belarus' delegation featured 3-on-3 ice hockey player, champion of the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games (Lausanne, Switzerland) Ilya Korzun, two-time champion of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games of 2018 (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in judo Artsiom Kolasau, bronze medalist in women's wrestling at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Natallia Varakina and bronze medalist in women's wrestling at the 2019 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival (Baku, Azerbaijan) Aliaksandra Kislyakova.

IOC expert Nils Holmegaard gave an online lecture on Safe Sports, and his colleague from the EOC Christopher Papamichalopoulos spoke about the EYOF Young Ambassadors Program and the Olympic values.

The young Olympians, as part of several teams, took part in a number of educational, sports and interactive events. The young athletes got a chance to check their functional readiness, learn about new types of training, drone operation, and try their hand at curling, quadrapong and soccerball.

Elizaveta Kapanadze, an expert of RUSADA Educational Programs Department, and her colleague Andrey Tigai told the young Olympians about the doping control procedures at the Anti-Doping educational seminar.

“It is a good experience for us. We exchanged opinions on different issues in sports, expressed our point of view. We talked a lot about the protection of young athletes and the anti-doping program. This forum is very useful for young people. I hope that in the future even more young athletes will be able to take part in it,” said Artsiom Kolasau.

Russian Olympic champions and medalists, sport functionaries, and representatives of the sports industry took part in the forum.

The event, which was partially held online this year, was traditionally organized by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) program Olympic Solidarity, Elena and Gennady Timchenko Charitable Foundation, and with the assistance of the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA.
