VTB United League agrees new season format

MINSK, 15 July (BelTA) – The VTB United League Board have met on 14 July to approve the number of teams, the format and regulations of the new basketball season, BelTA has learned.

BC Tsmoki Minsk will be part of the thirteen teams that will play in the new VTB United League season. The Belarusian team will take part in the competition for the 11th time. The teams will also include CSKA Moscow, Khimki, Zenit Saint Petersburg, UNICS Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Enisey Krasnoyarsk, Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar, Avtodor Saratov, Parma Perm (all Russia), Estonia's Kalev Tallinn, Poland's Zielona Gora, and Kazakhstan's Astana Nur-Sultan.

The regular season will kick off on 20 September. The teams will play a double round-robin tournament with home and away matches. Eight best teams will progress to the playoffs. BC Tsmoki Minsk have never reached the knockout round before.

Sergei Kushchenko was elected President of the VTB United League at the meeting on 14 July. Ilona Korstin was reelected Director General.

CSKA Moscow have won the VTB United League ten times. Khimki Moscow raised the trophy once, in 2011.
