MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 38 Victoria Azarenka secured a straight sets victory against qualifier Harmony Tan of France in her 2019 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic opening match, BelTA has learned.
After dominating the Frenchwoman's service games for a set and a half, Azarenka found herself in trouble as Tan rallied back. The Belarusian righted the ship just in time to seal the victory, 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes.
Victoria Azarenka will next face Croatia's Donna Vekic who saw off Misaki Doi of Japan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Belarus' world number ten Aryna Sabalenka, seeded second at the tournament, will play CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States.
Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic is the first women's tournament in the annual US Open Series.
