Sport minister: Helping others in the hour of need is in Belarusian DNA

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – Helping others in the hour of need is part of the Belarusians' DNA, Belarus Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said as he spoke ahead of the Men and Women Super Sprint Final of the ongoing IBU Open European Biathlon Championships in Raubichi, BelTA has learned.

“I am happy to welcome fans of biathlon in Raubichi and I want to congratulate you on another sport event that is held in Belarus. This year, the weather surprises us a lot, with the winter being abnormally warm, and the International Biathlon Union asked us to host the European championships,” the minister noted. “We agreed and have made everything to hold these competitions to a high standard. Belarusian sports fans like biathlon. Moreover, helping others in the hour of need is in our DNA,” Sergei Kovalchuk said. He added that Belarusian biathlon has a lot of good traditions and the country has great prospects for the development of this sport.

On 26 February, the championships rounded off with the Women Super Sprint Final. The competitions will continue on 27 February with the Single Mixed Relay (W+M) and 4x6 Mixed Relay. The Men 10 km Sprint and Women 7.5 km Sprint are scheduled for 29 February. The European championships will wrap up with the Men 12.5 km Pursuit and Women 10 km Pursuit on 1 March.

All in all, the event features 35 teams comprising about 270 athletes.

The 2020 IBU Open European Biathlon Championships were relocated from Estonia's Otepaa to Raubichi due to the warm weather in Estonia. The Belarusian Sport and Tourism Ministry and representatives of the Raubichi sports center expressed their readiness to host the competitions
