Sabalenka, Mertens progress in 2020 Australian Open doubles

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Belgium's Elise Mertens secured a first-round win in the 2020 Australian Open women's doubles event, defeating the U.S.-Czech tandem of Catherine Bellis and Marketa Vondrousova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in Melbourne, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian-Belgian duo will next face Arina Rodionova and Jaimee Fourlis of Australia.

Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia won the first round in the women's doubles event, defeating the Australian duo of Alexandra Bozovic and Amber Marshall in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 on 22 January. In the round of Last 32 the Belarusian-Slovak tandem will play either Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas and Elena Rybakina or the French tandem Alize Cornet and Fiona Ferro.

In the singles, Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich both lost their first-round matches.

In the men's singles round two, Belarus' Egor Gerasimov lost to Alexander Zverev from Germany 6-7, 4-6, 5-7. In the opener Egor Gerasimov defeated Casper Ruud of Norway in five sets (6-3, 7-6, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6).

The tournament, which is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the season, will be over on 2 February.
