MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka has reached her first US Open quarterfinal, storming past her former doubles partner, world number 16 Elise Mertens of Belgium, 6-4, 6-1, in an hour and 11 minutes, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next face either world number 9 Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic or Spain's world number 10 Garbine Muguruza, who earlier defeated Belarus' world number 19 Victoria Azarenka.
Aryna Sabalenka beat Serbia's world number 94 Nina Stojanovic, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-0, in the opener, and then saw off Slovenia's world number 40 Tamara Zidansek, 6-3, 6-1, and world number 29 Danielle Collins of the United States, 6-3, 6-3.
The Grand Slam season's final tournament in New York will finish on 12 September.
