Sabalenka loses in 2020 Australian Open first round

MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 12 Aryna Sabalenka lost the 2020 Australian Open first round to Spain's world number 54 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (6-8), BelTA has learned.

The match lasted for two hours and 13 minutes.

Earlier, Belarus' world number 94 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 5-7 to world number 119 Greet Minnen of Belgium.

Both the Belarusian players will go on to continue with their Australian Open campaign in the women's doubles event. Aryna Sabalenka, teamed up with Belgium's Elise Mertens, will face the U.S.-Czech tandem of Catherine Bellis and Marketa Vondrousova. Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova will take on the Australian duo of Alexandra Bozovic and Amber Marshall.

In the men's singles event Belarus' world number 98 Egor Gerasimov has moved into the second round to face world number 7 Alexander Zverev from Germany.
