Sabalenka beats Sakkari in Zhuhai

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 14 Aryna Sabalenka opened her 2019 Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai campaign with an efficient 6-3, 6-4 win over world number 22 Maria Sakkari of Greece in one hour and 20 minutes to kick off round-robin action in the Rose Group, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian will next play Belgium's world number 18 Elise Mertens, her partner in doubles.

Two more matches are scheduled for today: Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands (10) vs Donna Vekic of Croatia (20), and Madison Keys of the United States (13) vs China's Zheng Saisai (40).

The winners of the four groups will advance to the semifinals.

The tournament in Zhuhai, with the prize pot of over $2.4 million, will run through 27 October.
